Stay Ahead of XFG: Essential Facts About the Dominant COVID Variant

The COVID variant, known as XFG or “Stratus,” is the dominant strain in several countries. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it accounts for three-quarters of new infections across the United States and has already been detected in 38 countries. Experts expect increased numbers as schools start the new year, and the colder months arrive.

This variant shows no surprising differences in symptoms compared to previous omicron strains. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, tiredness, muscle aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, nausea, and diarrhea. As fever remains one of the main symptoms of COVID, it makes it important to take regular temperature checks with thermometers. Try using Exergen’s TempoTherm or TAT-2000C Temporal Artery Thermometer. It is accurate, fast, reliable, easy to use, non-invasive, and requires just a gentle swipe across the forehead by softly touching it.

Rapid antigen tests are effective at detecting XFG infections. Health authorities advise anyone with symptoms to test immediately. If the first result is negative but symptoms persist, they recommend repeating the test after 48 hours for a more reliable outcome.

Updated mRNA vaccines continue to offer protection against the XFG variant. While immunity against infection is temporary, vaccines still reduce the risk of severe illness. Doctors recommend most people schedule their next dose in autumn, ahead of the winter season. People in high-risk groups, however, are advised not to wait.

The best defenses remain straightforward. Wearing a mask in busy indoor spaces, keeping vaccinations up to date, and ensuring ventilation reduce risk considerably. Just as important are the basic hygiene including washing hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when unwell.

By staying vigilant and combining these steps, people can protect themselves and their  community.
