Uninvited Festival Guests: COVID and Fever

Summer 2025 has brought music festivals back in full swing. From the sunlit hills of Barcelona to the buzzing nights of Tokyo, crowds gather to enjoy live music, connections, and celebrations.

But even as the music plays, one unwelcome guest is lurking behind the scenes: new strains of COVID

Festivals Are Back: But Health Concerns Remain

Organizations have adapted. Many events continue to offer both in-person and virtual options. COVID hasn’t gone away. In 2024, Dutch health officials linked over 1,000 cases to a single dance festival despite safety checks.

Large crowds will always carry risk. One expert stated: “If you’re in a crowd of thousands, chances are someone has COVID.”

Fever: A Common Symptom

For many, the first sign of something wrong is a fever. It’s a classic festival complaining about heat, fatigue, maybe a bit too much partying. But now, it also raises concerns about infection.

As people feel unwell, tired, chilled, or warm to the touch, medical tents quickly fill. Temperature checks are as routine as handing out water.

Having an accurate thermometer on-site helps sort out what is going on. Many medical tent teams rely on tools like the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer because it’s fast, requires a swipe across the forehead by gently touching it, and most importantly, it is very accurate therefore reliable.

Organizers Need to Make Difficult Decisions

Canceling an event means lost revenue and unhappy fans, but outbreaks can damage their brand.

Still, the show goes on. Events continue shaped by lessons from the past few years. Health and safety are now part of the experience, not just behind the scenes.

Keep the Beat Going Safely

If you’re heading to a festival, be prepared. Bring sunscreen, stay hydrated, and if you’re not feeling well, check your temperature. It helps protect you and everyone around you.
