Heat Domes: What Are They and Their Impact

This summer, many Europeans and Americans experienced a “heat dome.” A heat dome is a high-pressure system that traps hot air close to the ground. Since there is no cool breeze and very little cloud cover, the heat keeps building up. For example, imagine walking outside and feeling like you’ve walked into an oven. Heat domes aren’t new, but they are happening more often and with increased intensity.

How Heat Affects the Body

The body usually keeps its temperature between about 97°F and 99.5°F (36°C to 37.5°C). However, when the outside temperature is over 104°F (40°C) it will struggle to cool down causing heat stress to set in. You might notice dry skin, dizziness, or confusion. This can lead to a heatstroke, which can be very serious and life-threatening. If you notice worsening symptoms, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

How to Protect Yourself from the Heat

Staying safe during extreme heat means paying attention to your body temperature. This is important for older adults, kids, and people with ongoing health issues. One option for monitoring temperature is the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer.  It’s quick, accurate, and just needs a gentle swipe across the forehead by gently touching it, making twice-daily checks easy.

Tips to Beat the Heat

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and skip alcohol.
  • Avoid the Hottest Times: Try not to be outside during peak heat hours.
  • Keep Cool: Use fans, air conditioning or stay in the shade.
  • Dress Light: Wear loose, breathable clothing.
  • Cool Down: Take cool showers or put damp cloths on your skin.

Heatwaves are not going away, so staying informed and prepared is key. Understanding what heat domes are and how they affect your body can help you take precautions to stay safe. Forewarned is forearmed.
