India’s Healthcare Challenge: Growing Aging Population

India is facing the challenge of a growing ageing population. While longer lifespans reflect resilience and progress, they also bring heightened vulnerability, particularly to chronic disease, multimorbidity, and the rising costs of long-term care. For millions of older adults, this phase of life coincides with reduced income and increased dependency, exposing them not only to health risks but also to financial insecurity. Healthcare has become one of the most pressing challenges for seniors in India.

The India Ageing Report 2023 reveals that an increasing number of the elderly are struggling with out-of-pocket spending on doctor visits, diagnostics, medications, and hospitalizations. Limited insurance coverage and gaps in government health schemes leave them exposed to these costs, leading to increased spending on healthcare. It is especially felt by women, rural populations, and those without pensions or savings.

However, healthcare innovation can play a role. In our recent blog post, Subtle Signs, Serious Risks: Why Twice-Daily Temperature Checks Matter for the Elderly, we discussed how ageing changes the body’s response to threats such as infections and inflammation. With age, the immune system weakens and the thermal response dulls. For older adults, a fever may not reach the standard 38 °C threshold—an increase to just 37.2 °C can signal infection, particularly in those with a baseline closer to 36.3 °C.

This makes it vital to understand a person’s individual “normal” temperature and track even slight variations. Because fever responses in older adults may be blunted, infections can remain unnoticed until more serious symptoms appear such as fatigue, confusion, or dehydration. Regular temperature checks, especially in the early morning and evening, significantly improve the chances of detecting these subtle but meaningful shifts.
