Hospital leaders are rethinking what matters most in nursing care. According to NSI Nursing Solutions‘ latest Hospital Executive Level Priorities (HELP) survey, quality of care and patient safety are at the top of the list.
The 2025 survey is based on responses from 1,676 hospital- and healthcare executives, including CEOs, COOs, nurse leaders, and HR professionals offering an overview of current priorities nationwide. Of note readmission rates ranked 20th out of 20, scoring just 47.8 out of 100.
Now healthcare leaders are focused on safer environments and improving staffing strategies. Quality of care and patient safety earned the highest score (91.7), although it dropped slightly from the previous year.
Retention and recruitment continue to be priorities for decision-makers. With talent retention scoring 73.5 and nurse recruitment close behind at 72. staffing challenges continue to be present. Workplace violence (71) and maintaining competitive wages (71.4) reflect the real pressures nurses face.
This shift suggests that while reducing readmissions is still important, healthcare leaders recognize that it starts with a strong, supported workforce. Addressing burnout, improving shift coverage, and easing workloads are all crucial steps toward delivering safer, more effective care.
