Earlier this year, 27 medical missionaries from Baylor University traveled thousands of miles to western Kenya near Lake Victoria. This rural area has been ravaged by a long standing drought, leaving its inhabitants with little food and in dire need of medical care. The missionary team traveled to the area in 2009 and was responsible for bringing all medical equipment and supplies for their trip, including thermometers. Over the course of one week, they cared for 900 patients, each of whom needed his/her temperature taken at the beginning of the visit. This process was time consuming because the team was only equipped with mercury thermometers.
When the 2010 missionary team reached out to Exergen for help, the company was more than happy to provide them with Temporal Artery thermometers. With just two of these scanners, the team was able take the temperature of all 700 patients with ease and efficiency. One scanner was used to quickly triage patients and the other was used at their vitals station. “Because of the temporal scanner, sick children and adults were seen and treated quickly. There is no doubt that the quality of care given improved drastically because of your donation,” said Andy Waller, member of Kenya Medical Missions Team 2009 and 2010.
