New Study Shows Temporal Artery Thermometer Accurate in Adults
Boston, MA - March 25, 2002, - A recent study1 conducted at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) demonstrated that there was no significant difference between temperatures measured with a gentle scan of the forehead with Exergen Corporation's temporal artery (TA) thermometer, and an invasive pulmonary artery (PA) catheter thermistor. Considered the ultimate gold standard for temperature measurement due to insertion into the heart, PA thermistor temperatures are monitored only during certain procedures in acute care institutions. The study also found that the temporal artery thermometer was far more accurate than an oral thermometer. One hundred thirty subjects were in the study, with average age of 65.
This new study proves that Exergen's TA thermometer is accurate in adults as well as children, previously proven more accurate than ear thermometry2 by a Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School study. The TA thermometer measures temperature with a gentle scan of the forehead across the temporal artery. The non-invasive thermometer takes temperature readings at more than 1,000 times per second. The patented arterial heat balance technology computes the correct temperature without any discomfort to the child or adult. It is protected by 20 U.S. and foreign patents. Further descriptions and clinical information are available at www.exergen.com. Professional models are available through many well known medical distributors, such as Owens & Minor, McKesson, and Allegiance. A retail consumer model is available nationwide at all Babies R' Us stores, and online at www.babiesrus.com and J&J's BabyCenter www.baby.comIt will soon be available in retail drug chains.

Exergen Corporation is a world leader in the science and technology of non-invasive thermometry systems, manufacturing an extensive line of patented infrared scanners, thermometers, sensors and controls used in a wide variety of industrial and medical applications. The company is dedicated to providing products that are more cost-effective, reliable and accurate than any other thermometry method.

Located in Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital is the third oldest hospital in the United States and the largest in New England. It consistently ranks as one of the country's top three hospitals by U.S. News and World Report. The MGH conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the United States, with an annual research budget of more than $200 million. It is the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and nearly all of the hospital's active staff physicians are on the Harvard Medical School faculty.
